Conscious Costuming

The entertainment industry is a major contributor to unnecessary waste. The average feature-length film generates nearly. 240 tons of material waste, much of it from sets, props and costumes designed for single use before ending up in landfills.

ReThread Collective takes a more sustainable approach by sourcing costumes and props secondhand whenever possible. Once filming wraps, materials are recycled, repurposed or transformed into something entirely new—keeping usable items out of the waste stream and extending their life beyond the screen.

Citywide The first zero waste film

Fishtown Films is a Philadelphia-based studio focused on sustainability and reducing waste in the film industry. After seeing the environmental impact of filmmaking, they set out in 2019 to create the first zero-waste movie. Every part of production was carefully planned to reduce waste, including using reusable food containers, recycled and borrowed props and recycled costumes.

ReThread Collective helped costume the cast using recycled and upcycled clothing. All clothing and accessories were sourced secondhand and recycled again after filming.

By the end of production, all of the movie’s trash fit inside one mason jar.

The Dogs Coming Soon

The Dogs is the second feature-length film from Fishtown Films, taking an even more community-focused approach by casting local talent and highlighting the beauty of Philadelphia. The film embraces a darker moodier aesthetic than their debut film, Citywide.
